Do I Really Need a Sump Pump?

Sump Pump

Your sump pump may be the best defense you have against flooding.

You’ve surely heard of a sump pump before–your neighbors may mention it after a big storm or your plumber may have mentioned it while looking at your home. It’s something that you may not even realize you’re missing, that is, you don’t notice it’s missing until you really needed it. It can be the difference between major water damage in your home or not, so if you’re not sure if you need a sump pump, let’s see why you may!

What Are They?

The sump pump is a device that is installed beneath the basement floor or crawl space that collects groundwater before it begins to flood your home. Groundwater easily rises through the cracks in the foundation of your home when there’s big storms or long periods of rain which can cause floods. If there’s even the tiniest possibility of a flood causing damage to your basement or crawl space, a sump pump is a necessary tool that will help save you plenty of money in the end.

How Do They Work?

Once you install a sump pump, water will automatically drain into a specially constructed pit that houses the pump itself. They have automated flotation systems that cause the device to turn on and start pumping water as soon as the water level reaches a certain height. This water is then pumped outside through a hose, somewhere that the water can drain away from your home and prevents it from causing any damage.

Do I Really Need a Sump Pump?

If your basement or crawl space experiences below-ground wetness, you definitely need a sump pump. More homes than not need sump pumps so if you’re on the edge about it, call your plumber and ask what they think. Many of our homes have foundation cracks that can eventually lead to flooding when there’s a lot of rain. Water damage is expensive to recover from, not to mention incredibly stressful, so a sump pump may just be right for you.
