What Causes Rattling Pipes?

Pipes 2

Those noisy pipes may be keeping you up at night, but it’s pretty easily solvable.

Noisy water papers are incredibly obnoxious, especially when you’re just trying to get to sleep at night. The good news is that you don’t have to just accept it and move on. Noisy plumbing has some causes that can be tracked down and stopped. Let’s take a look at some of the most prominent reasons as to why your pipes may be so noisy.

Water Hammers

Sometimes when water goes through your pipes and comes to the end near a faucet, it will create a loud noise that some compare to the swinging of a hammer. These water hammers are preventable by installing air chambers that cushion moving water. Sometimes, though, you’ll need to refill these air chambers if you hear water hammers often. To do so, shut the main water supply valve off, turn on the highest faucet in your house and let it drain, and turn the lowest faucet in your house on and let it do the same. After all of the water is drained, you can turn off the lowest faucet, turn on the main valve, and allow water to flow through the highest faucet that is still open.

Too Much Pressure

If your water pressure is too high, it may be the culprit causing all those loud noises in your pipes. You can adjust the regulator which is attached to the water supply line to slow it down and prevent those obnoxious noises. If you don’t have a regulator valve, have one installed by a professional plumber. This can also save you on your monthly water bills and prevent wear and tear on water-supplied appliances.

Fixing Mounts

Be sure to take a look at all the visible plumbing pipes in your home and make sure they’re as tight as possible. Loose pipes can vibrate and bang against a wall which may be causing the loud noises you’re experiencing. You’ll also want to check that all straps and properly installed and this will significantly reduce any noises that may be happening.
