Your sinks are one of the hardest working parts of your home. When you think about it, they honestly see a lot of work: food scraps and particles that rinsed down the kitchen sink; muddy, grimy hands that get washed in the bathroom sink; and sudsy, linty washing machine water that goes down the stationary tub, just to name a few jobs. Where would we be without the usefulness of a sink? Stuck, and that’s how it feels when you encounter a clogged up drain in one of your sinks. But what can you do about it?
Clear Out The Sink
The first step is to clear out as much of the standing water as possible from your sink as soon as you can. If it sits for too long, that water will turn totally disgusting, especially if there’s food waste in there. If the sink is just slow to drain, you can probably wait it out and allow the sink to empty on its own. If it is really and truly clogged, then you have to do something else to get rid of the water, like bailing it out with cups or a bucket.
Clean It Out
While it is so tempting to rush right out to the store and grab the most heavy duty “ultimate clog destroyer” drain cleaner you see, don’t. Those drain cleaners do work, but at a price. They can weaken your pipes and even cause damage that could lead to a bigger plumbing emergency down the line. Start with some safer alternatives that you likely already have around the house, such as vinegar, lemon juice, or even baking soda and hot water.
Poke and Prod
There’s one last trick in your DIY arsenal, and thats to use a tool to poke and prod the clog and try to dislodge it. If you have an old wire coat hanger, you can bend it out of shape and use it to try to get to the clog. If not, you could see if you can rent or borrow a plumbing auger, which is a drill-like tool for breaking up clogs. If none of this works, it is time to call in the professionals to see what they can do.
