How Do You Prevent Water Damage?

Water Damage

Water damage is a huge problem for lots of homeowners but it’s easily preventable.

Many homeowners find that preventing water damage is actually a somewhat difficult task. With all the hidden pipes in our homes–and the damage that can come about through a storm or other issues with a home–it’s no surprise that water damage is more common than we would like it to be. For those of us who really value our homes, it’s important that we take all possible measures in preventing water damage from impacting the structure and value of our homes.

Fix Water Leaks

First and foremost: take care of those leaks. Any noticeable dripping pipes must be taken care of before the problem gets worse. If you notice dark spots under pipes or on ceilings, this could be the sign of a bigger issue. You’ll also want to repair any cracked caulking as that could be a precursor to extreme water damage. Ideally, you should be inspecting your roof once a year and repairing any loose, missing, or damaged shingles.

Testing Your Sump Pump

Sump pumps will make a huge difference during a storm so you can’t afford for yours to break down when you need it most. It’s important that we check our sump pump at least once a year or, during heavy storm seasons, even more than that. Fill your sump pump with water and watch for the “float” (like that of your toilet) to rise, which then turns the pump on. Make sure to watch and see if the water level falls.

Importance of Good Drainage

Poor drainage can lead to a weakened foundation, which may cause cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to get into your home, eventually causing water damage. Your gutters should be cleaned regularly–especially now that fall is upon us! You’ll also want to make sure that your downspouts are directing water 5 to 10 feet away from the home, otherwise you run the risk of water seeping in and impacting your home’s foundation.
