Steps for Preventing a Plumbing Emergency this Holiday Season

Mahon Plumbing Emergency Holiday

Experiencing a plumbing emergency can ruin everything, so take steps to avoid this and have a happy holiday season.

When the holidays come around, we all start to congregate inside. Whether you’re hosting guests or visiting your family, you want everything to run smoothly. And what’s more important for having a smooth holiday season than avoiding a plumbing system emergency?

The good news is, whether you’re at home or away for the holidays, you can take some steps to avoid a plumbing emergency. Stop every plumbing emergency before it starts with these tips!

Be Careful With Drains

Most families end up doing a good deal of cooking during the holiday season. As a result, our kitchen sinks can take on some serious damage, potentially leading to a plumbing emergency! We dump all kinds of food waste down our drains which can ultimately lead to drain clogs. Make sure you avoid putting certain kinds of waste down your drain, including:

  • Potato peels
  • Poultry skins
  • Fibrous foods
  • Pits and seeds
  • Rice
  • Pasta
  • Coffee grounds
  • Eggshells
  • Bones
  • Grease / fat / oil

Correct Garbage Disposal Use

There are more considerations regarding a garbage disposal that you should keep in mind if you want to avoid plumbing emergencies. Garbage disposals shouldn’t replace your trashcan entirely; in fact, you should avoid putting large amounts of leftovers down the drain and should instead use your trashcan or a compost pile. Garbage disposals are really only for those little bits of food that are stuck on your plate that needs to be taken care of right before you wash the dishes.

Figure Out Shower Schedules

Enough people in your home can overload a shower system and cause some serious issues. Most experts recommend waiting around 10-15 minutes between showers, but with everyone trying to get ready for a big family dinner, it can be difficult to organize. Try to create a shower schedule so you’re all enjoying warm showers and aren’t putting too much stress on the water heater tank.

Prepping a Bathroom

If you’re hosting, prepare for the worst by equipping your bathroom with a plunger, toilet brush, and even a small plumbing snake just in case your drain does take a hit. Avoid letting guests use flushable wipes, because even though they’re designed for toilets, too many of them could do damage to your system. Take some time to brush up on what you can and can’t flush down a toilet in general so you can avoid causing damage to any toilets this holiday season. That would be a terrible plumbing emergency to have to deal with during the holiday season!
