4 Tips to Avoid a Potential Plumbing Emergency This Holiday Season

When your house guests ring your doorbell, make sure you’re equipped to avoid a plumbing emergency.

It’s the middle of December, and you know what that means. It is the most wonderful time of the year, except for when you’re ankle-deep in water or desperately trying to think of what could be causing a clogged drain in your home. When your house guests ring your doorbell, make sure you’re equipped to avoid a plumbing emergency and enjoy the holiday season without a hitch. Here are four helpful tips to prevent a possible plumbing emergency around the holidays.

Clean Out Those Drains

Your home’s drains are soon to be consumers of more than you think. If you want to make sure they’re working right, consider having them cleaned before your friends and family arrive. Installing a simple drain strainer in our sinks and showers will ensure debris will not get stuck up your pipes and save you from having to unclog the drain or deal with a severe plumbing emergency. Wouldn’t you rather be participating in your holiday party then dealing with some clogged up drains?

Keep A Close Eye on Your Garbage Disposal

Certain foods are a recipe for disaster for your home’s garbage disposal. Whether you’re husking corn or looking for a spot to dump your extra grease or oil, the garbage disposal is never the place. Your garbage disposal can only deal with so much going down it, and the consequences of throwing even the smallest amount of unwanted items down your drain can cause quite the stir. Choose the trash can instead.

Be Conscious of Your Shower Times

Unless you’re planning to close off your bathroom doorway or invest in an “out of order” sign, your friends and family are going to want to shower. Ask them to wait 15 minutes in between shower times so your drain and water heater can catch up. If your hot water is frequently running out, perhaps its time to invest in a new water heater.

Invest in Some Extra Trash Bins

Toilet clogs are the last thing you are going to want to deal with. There’s a lot of guests in your home, and the holiday festivities are in full swing. Get some extra trash bins and put them in the bathroom and kitchen to make sure unwanted trash isn’t being disposed of improperly. Place one near the toilet so guests won’t be tempted to use the toilet as a garbage can and cause a plumbing issue.
