What You Can Do to Remedy a Slow Tub Drain

Tub Drain

Dealing with a slow tub drain is never fun. If it has been an issue for you, try out these home tips.

When it comes to plumbing, few things are as annoying and frustrating to deal with as a slow drain. There are many possible culprits for why you’re drain is slow, but the first thing that’s probably on your mind is getting it clear. Whether it’s in the kitchen sink, bathroom sink, or tub, a slow drain will impact your daily routine and slow you down as well. Here are some ways you can remedy a slow tub drain.

Baking Soda and Vinegar

Once many people encounter a slow tub drain, their first response is to head to the store and pick up a liquid cleaner. Although this method is often effective, there are some other alternatives that would save you money and be a little more sensitive to the environment. One technique is to use a mixture of baking soda and vinegar. When these ingredients combine, they result in a chemical reaction that creates a lot of bubbles and foaming. The reaction is what will help clear your drain without the use of harsh chemicals that are bad for the environment that rough on your pipes. To create the formula, use one cup of white vinegar and one cup of baking soda. For some added power you can also include a cup of salt. The most effective method is to dump the ingredients directly into the drain. Make sure that there is no water in the tub that would dilute the mixture. Pour in the baking soda and salt first and immediately follow up with the vinegar to start the bubbling reaction. After about 10 minutes, use a pot of boiling water down the drain to finish the sequence.

Plumbing Snake

Another great alternative to chemical drain cleaners is the use of a plumbing snake. This is a tool that even professionals use to clear out slow drains. A plumbing snake is a thick piece of metal wire that usually features a spike on one end. It’s long enough to fit down the drain yet thin enough to be rotated. With the right approach, a plumbing snake can clear out a slow drain in a matter of minutes.
