How You Can Save Water with Your Plumbing Fixtures

Plumbing Fixtures

Plumbing fixtures can actually end up saving you some energy if you take the right steps.

Both environmentally and money conscious homeowners look for ways to save energy and resources at home. One big area of focus is usually water consumption. If you’re looking for ways to save and use less water at home, there are many methods to choose from, including changing certain elements of your daily routine. In addition to that, you can also use appliances and accessories that help monitor and control the amount of water you use at home. Here are some ways you can save water with your plumbing fixtures.

Pressure-Reducing Valve

Did you know that most home operate with water pressure hovering around 70psi? That’s about 35psi higher than what is actually necessary for your home to run efficiently. By installing a pressure-reducing valve, you will end up saving a lot of water. Have a plumber check your water pressure and if they find it to be on the higher end, consider installing a pressure-reducing valve.

Performance Showerheads

On average your standard showerhead will use up to 2.5 gallons of water per minute. Even for people that take 10-minute showers, that’s about 25 gallons of water just for one shower. With a performance showerhead you can reduce that usage down to about 1.75 gallons per minute.

High-Efficiency Toilet

Most older toilets use about 3.5 gallons of water per flush. With a high-efficiency toilet you’ll see that number reduced to less than 1.3. Look for newer toilets that come with the Environmental Protection Agency “water sense” label, which proves that the toilet was tested and proven to have maximum power.

Re-Circulating Hot Water System

The purpose of a re-circulating hot water system is to get hot water to you faster without wasting all that cold water while it heats up. It’s a great addition to your existing plumbing system that will not only save water but make it must more efficient for you to shower, cook, and clean.
