Three Ways to Make Sure Your Plumbing Lasts

Plumbing

Get the most out of your plumbing by making sure that it lasts.

As a homeowner, there are few things as frustrating and worrying as a plumbing problem. Water damage can leave lasting, severe damage and is costly to repair. With that in mind, working to ensure the health of your homes plumbing system can significantly reduce your risks and increase the lifespan of your system. To ensure that your home is safe and secure from potential damage, make sure to follow these three tips.

Avoid Clogs

Many of us have habits that harm our plumbing even if we don’t intend them to. From flushing things that should not be flushed to rinsing things down the drain that we should not; it’s time to unlearn some habits. In your kitchen you may find yourself letting food, cooking oil, and coffee grinds find their way into your sink. All of these items should be left to the trash or compost pile rather than your sink! Not only can they create clogs, but they can degrade the pipes causing bursts. When it comes to toilets, it’s important to remember that there’s no such thing as a flushable wipe. Aside from toilet paper, nothing should ever be flushed.

Make Friends With Snakes

When you do find yourself with a clog in one of your drains, avoid liquid drain cleaners like the plague. Drain cleaners are often ineffective, and they can cause your pipes to degrade and become damaged because as they eat away at clogs, they also eat away at pipes. Instead, use a manual tool like a snake to effectively and physically remove the source of the clog once and for all. While this may be gross, it’s also a good incentive to stop putting things down the drain.

Keep Up With Maintenance

When you’ve found a trustworthy plumber you like, have them start an annual maintenance check to ensure that all aspects of your plumbing system are in good working order. Not only can this prevent surprise problems, but it helps to ensure that any care is done on time to ensure your home’s plumbing lasts for years to come.
