How to Take Care of Residential Septic Systems

Mahon Plumbing offers installation and maintenance services for septic systems of all sizes.

Whether you are a new homeowner or a landlord, taking care of a residential septic system is essential to avoid nasty consequences. Even if you’ve lived in the same home for years, consider getting an inspection for your septic system. Mahon Plumbing offers installation and maintenance services for septic systems of all sizes. When it comes to your septic system, more frequent inspections are the way to go. Depending on the size of your septic tank, it may need to be pumped multiple times a year.

Schedule An Annual Inspection of Your Residential Septic System

Your septic system works around the clock to hold your waste. As new waste and new substances are introduced to your septic system, it can stop working at any point. An annual inspection is necessary to keep things in order and to watch for any possible leakages or overflow issues. Eventually, your septic system will need to be pumped, or problems will arise on their own. It is normal to need your septic tank pumped every three to five years.

Avoid Flushing Non-Biogradeable Items

One of the most common issues with septic systems is the build-up of non-biodegradable items in your septic tank. Your septic tank uses bacteria that eat biological waste over time. However, if there is an accumulation of items the bacteria cannot consume, your septic tank may break down. You should never flush down things like feminine hygiene products, cigarettes, diapers, and chemical cleaners to your septic tank.

Expand Your Septic System With Your Home

As with any renovation for your home, make sure all of your plumbing and electrical lines are expanded. Not only should you make sure you have enough piping for your plumbing, but make sure your septic tank gets expanded with your renovation. Contact Mahon Plumbing for an estimate and schedule your installation.

Protect Your Drain-Field

A drain-field removes residual contaminants that drain out of your septic system. Your septic tank is usually buried beneath it. To protect your drain-field avoid parking cars on or near it. If you plant trees in the area, make sure they are considerably far from the drain-field to avoid roots messing with your septic system. Taking proper care of your drain-field could give it a lifetime of 50 years or more.
