Tips for Saving Water With Your Plumbing

Plumbing

Your plumbing can actually help you save water and spend less on utilities.

If you’re looking for ways to make our home more eco-friendly while cutting down on your monthly water bill there are several steps you can take. One of the most significant steps is to check your home for any leaks, while these can cost you in water, leaks can also cost you in damage, finding and fixing any leaks is an essential step to saving. Next, if you live in an older home, it might be time to make some upgrades. Energy Star appliances and more efficient technology has increased dramatically in the last few years. Most modern dishwashers can save up to 15% more water, while washing machines may save up to 40%.

Sink

Adding an in-sink aerator to your faucet is a great way to reduce water usage. An aerator limits the amount of water to come out without lowering the water pressure, this means that you’ll use less water without realizing. When washing dishes by hand always use a soaking method to remove tough food residue. While it may be tempting to let your water pressure do the work this is less effective and more wasteful than a hot water soak.

Dishwasher

Finding the delicate balance between underfilled and overloaded in your dishwasher is the key to saving water. A machine that is not fully loaded will waste water, while one that is too full will result in dishes that need to be run a second time. We recommend leaving your washer for harder to clean, and less spacious items. Large items like mixing bowls and big pots can take up disproportionate amounts of space and water in a dishwasher despite needing significantly less if hand washed.

Washing Machine

One of the best ways to save water while doing laundry is to make sure you’re adjusting the load size setting appropriately. If you are running a small load you will need less water to clean than a larger one, likewise, if a load is too large, too little water will not be effective. Most modern washers have a sensor that determines load size, others may need manual adjustment. To save further energy while doing laundry, only use hot water when necessary.
