Why Does My Plumbing Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

Why Does My Plumbing Water Smell Like Rotten Eggs?

A nasty, rotten egg smell in your water is a definite cause of concern for homeowners.

Have you started to notice a rotten egg smell coming out of your tap water or when you go to take a shower? A nasty, rotten egg smell in your water is a definite cause of concern for homeowners, especially when you aren’t sure why it’s happening. The source of foul, egg smelling water is usually due to a build-up of sulfur bacteria. Fortunately, this issue can be resolved fairly easily. Mahon Plumbing can explain WHY this problem happens and how we can treat this issue for you.

The Cause of Rotten Egg Smelling Water

Rotten egg smelling water is caused by an overgrowth of hydrogen sulfide bacteria in your home’s water supply and plumbing system. Sulfur, which grows within groundwater, is a natural occurrence caused by the decay of vegetation. Over time, the decay can build up, which creates an overgrowth of sulfur. Or, even worse, you might have a break in your pipes, which has led to sulfur invading your pipes. This overgrowth smells distinctly of rotten eggs when you run your tap water or go to take a shower. While the scent of sulfur is incredibly foul, it isn’t usually harmful to drink, but it’s recommended to contact Mahon Plumbing to resolve and repair this issue quickly.

Why You Should Repair This Problem Quickly

Hydrogen sulfide within your water and plumbing can lead to damage and corrosion, which might become incredibly costly if left unresolved. When you start to smell rotten eggs coming from your pipes, you can perform an at-home test (if you have well water) to see if hydrogen sulfide is the potential cause. To perform an at-home test of well water, do not use any water within your home for 6 to 8 hours. This allows for gas to build up. After 6 to 8 hours have passed, you can run your water and see if there’s a distinct rotten egg odor. If so, you have an overgrowth of hydrogen sulfide.
