3 Common Winter Plumbing Problems

Winter Plumbing

Does winter have you worried about your winter plumbing situation? Here are some tips!

Winter is one of the most stressful times of the year for your plumbing system, as it’s subjected to the freeze-thaw cycle and chilly temperatures. There are many common winter plumbing problems that residents throughout Baltimore and Maryland face. If you are concerned about your plumbing this winter, Mahon Plumbing can help!

Frozen Pipes Outdoors

The temperatures outside have been incredibly cold over the course of the winter so far, and things are just going to get colder. Since the weather has been so chilly, many outdoor pipes are at risk of freezing. Since there is a high level of water pressure coming from inside of the home and temperatures near the freezing point outside of the home, the combination can lead to frozen exterior pipes. To prevent freezing, you should always keep at least one or two taps inside of your home open so that water is flowing. You can also turn off the water supply outside of your home to prevent frozen outdoor pipes.

Frozen Pipes Indoors

If you aren’t using much water this weekend or take a long trip away, the pipes inside of your home can also freeze. Any indoor pipes that are frozen are at immediate and serious risk of bursting or leaking. Make sure that exterior water connections are closed and place faucet jackets on them for additional insulation if necessary. If you are concerned about a frozen pipe inside of your home, call Mahon Plumbing immediately.

Water Heater Failure

Is your hot water supply leaving you a little bit chilly? If you aren’t getting enough hot water or your water isn’t heating up past a tepid temperature, your water heater is due for servicing or a replacement. The temperature gauge should show you what temperature your water is set at. Have a gas heater? Check the pilot light to see if it’s lit. If everything seems to be working (except for, of course, the hot water), give Mahon Plumbing a call.
