Plumbing Tips to Get You Ready for Spring

Plumbing

Winter can wreak havoc on your plumbing. Make sure you properly prepare for spring.

Winter can cause a variety of problems to your home including causing trouble with your plumbing. Over time hoses and pipes can develop leaks and cracks, especially when exposed to low temperatures, as you’re preparing your spring to-do lists make sure that getting a thorough plumbing checkup is on your list. Taking the time to double check your plumbing can save you time and money by preventing damage from flooding and leaks.

For the Kitchen and Bathroom

The first thing to check every spring is your kitchen and bathroom sink faucets and pipes to check for leaks and signs of mold growth. If you notice any mold or mildew it’s likely you have a leak even if it is not immediately visible. While you’re checking, make sure to rotate the water valves, this will dislodge any caulk, rust, or minerals that have built up.

Heating Devices and Appliances

Your appliances are another area you’ll want to check to ensure optimal performance and prevent unnecessary leaks. The first thing you can do to improve efficiency and prevent problems is to drain the water from your water heater in order to remove any built-up sediment. Now is also a good time to check the heat level of the unit, if it’s over 120ºF you may want to reduce it to help with electricity costs. Additionally, check the hoses of your washing machine and dishwasher, these are cheap to replace but if they are cracked it can lead to expensive damage.

Last Minute Checks

Along with the above, there are a few other items to cross off your checklist, for instance before you turn the water supply to your hoses back on you will want to check that none of the hose bibs froze and cracked over the winter. You’ll also want to check your sump pump to ensure it’s working properly, this can be done easily enough by adding water to the sump pit to see if the pump activates. Lastly, take the time to check your gutters, yard drains, and downspouts to make sure no debris is caught in them and blocking water flow.
