Toilet Repairs: Warning Signs You Need to Know

Tips for catching toilet problems early and preventing more repairs in the future should be on everyone’s reading list.

Wherever you do your business, a toilet repair can be a considerable inconvenience. Tips for catching toilet problems early and preventing more repairs in the future should be on everyone’s reading list.

Warning Signs

Sometimes our plumbing speaks to us. Here are some common sounds and their causes:

  • Phantom or ghost flushes are when the toilet seems to flush on its own. The ghost flush is usually caused by a leak inside the toilet’s tank. Ghost flushes are an issue that can have multiple causes and should be left to professionals to avoid a high water bill.
  • Hissing sounds after flushing, there is an issue with the inlet water valve if your toilet hisses at you. The inlet water valve controls how much water refills the toilet’s water tank.
  • Consistent trickling is a definitive tell that your toilet’s flapper valve has gone wrong. The flapper valve prevents extra water from filling the bowl once the toilet has refilled after a flush. You can temporarily fix this by cleaning the flapper.

Checking your toilet for leaks regularly is something you can do to monitor your toilet’s condition. To check for a leaky toilet, simply drop a few drops of food coloring in the toilet’s water tank. Don’t flush and wait about half an hour. If there is food coloring in the bowl, you may have a leak. Clean your flapper and try again. If the issue persists, call us! Other times, there is not much warning before your toilet overflows. Check your shower drain if there is an ungodly smell in your bathroom.
